Vintage Ruffled Coaster

Materials:

150-yd ball 100% cotton thread, size 10

Steel crochet hook size 8 (1.50 mm)

Finishing Materials:

Spray starch (optional)

Gauge: 2 rows = 1/2"

Finished Size: Approx 4" dia

Skill Level: Intermediate

Special Stitches:

Dc decrease/dec: (yo, insert hook in next st, pull up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) as many times as indicated, yo, draw through last lps on hook to complete the st.

3 Dc cluster: yo, (insert hook in next st, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps once) 3 times, yo, draw through last 4 lps on hook to complete the st.

4 Dc cluster: yo, (insert hook in next st, draw up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps once) 4 times, yo, draw through last 5 lps on hook to complete the st.

Instructions:

Ch 8; join with a sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1) Ch 3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), (23 dc) in ring; join with a sl st to first dc (3rd ch of beg ch 3): 24 dc.

Rnd 2) Ch 4 (counts as first dc, plus ch 1); * (dc, ch 1) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 24 dc/24 sps.

Rnd 3) Ch 3, dc in joining, ch 1; * (2 dc, ch 1) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 48 dc/24 sps.

Rnd 4) Ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 2; * dc in next 2 dc, ch 2; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 48 dc/24 ch 2 sps.

Rnd 5) Rep rnd 4.

Rnd 6) Ch 3, (2 dc) in next dc, ch 1, (2 dc) in next dc, dc in next dc, ch 2; * dc in next dc, (2 dc) in next dc, ch 1, (2 dc) in next dc, dc in next dc, ch 2; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 72 dc.

Rnd 7) Ch 3, (dc dec over next 2 dc) twice see special sts (sk ch 1 sp bet), dc in next dc, ch 3, sc in next sp, ch 3; * dc in next dc, (dc dec over next 2 dc) twice (sk ch 1 sp bet), dc in next dc, ch 3, sc in next sp, ch 3; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 48 sts.

Rnd 8) Ch 2, 3 dc cluster over next 3 sts see special sts, (ch 5, sc in next sp) twice, ch 5; * 4 dc cluster over next 4 sts see special sts, (ch 5, sc in next sp) twice, ch 5; rep from * around; join with a sl st to top of first cluster, sl st to center of next ch 5 sp. (Note) Stop here for coaster pattern and end off.

Finishing:

Spray with water or spray starch if desired and shape on a terry cloth to dry.
